If you’ve visited Melrose during a show, you’re probably aware that we offer deferred billing. Order what you want in January, we’ll ship it during the summer and you don’t have to pay until December! We’re sure you agree this is a pretty good deal. But—did you know that it’s more than that?
Most customers don’t realize that pre-booking in January is the secret behind Melrose’s ability to offer ready to ship holiday product throughout the entire year – even right up until Christmas! The short version of how it works? We look at all the orders placed at the January shows and use them to determine our most popular items. This allows us to adjust the quantity of our orders to make sure we meet YOUR demands all year! This means you get what you ordered at the show AND can confidently reorder product when you need to.
Now, for the longer version!
~ We must place our orders right after the shows. Factory lead times are anywhere from 5-6 months, or potentially longer. If we wait just another month longer, there’s a chance you wouldn’t receive the product before Christmas!
~ In order for us to continue to offer product all throughout the selling season, we have to do some major number crunching before we place our orders. Show orders (x) a multiplier figured off sales history (=) our total order quantity. How does this equation affect you? If you don’t place your order in January, you aren’t going to be figured into our forecast. You may still get your initial order, but we could be sold out by October – when you really need to reorder more. Bottom line, the more precise numbers we have in January, the more stock you can choose from in November and December.
~ Other wholesalers place their holiday orders from factories before the January shows. What does this mean for you? A lower fill rate—we’ve heard of some as low as 60-70%. How can you manage your inventory if you don’t really know what part of your order will arrive at your shop?
~ Top Sellers! We know coming out of the January shows which items will be our top sellers for the rest of the year. And we can guarantee that you will sell out of some of those top sellers before the end of your selling season. Our goal is to be sure we have that item in stock when you need to reorder, all the way through December!
~ And finally, everything you learned above only works because we are able to work together as a team. We need to see your orders at the show so we can accurately forecast, and you want to be able to order the products you need, when you need them!
