How Retailers Can Avoid Burn-out in the Busy Season
It’s that time of Summer—the busy season! That’s why this week Melrose is sharing tips for retailers to take a break and stay sane.
Mid-summer is here and retail is heating up. If you’re a florist you must be in the midst of wedding season. If you’re a gift shop in a destination town the high season is probably bringing you that annual flood of tourists. And if you’re anywhere else, well, we bet you’ve been to a summer market by now and are trying to plan for all the product that will come in as you get ready to set your store for fall.
With your razor sharp focus on your business it can be easy to forget the little things like taking some time out for yourself. That’s why we’ve put together a list of four fast ways to perk yourself up this summer, so you can stay in the game and not get burnt out.
- Eat breakfast…we know you know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However it can be easy to skip when you’re managing a business. So when you’re grocery shopping take a few steps to make breakfast fool proof. Grab a box of your favorite breakfast bars and apples or oranges which keep and stash them in your desk at work for those mornings when nothing is working right and lunch seems so far away.
- Take a 5 minute refresher…take 5 minutes in the afternoon to step out of your shop. Breathe deeply for a few minutes; smell the summer air. Look up at the sky and marvel at the birds flying above. Look around and see if any new flowers are blooming or if your neighboring shops have changed their windows. This is your time to just appreciate that it’s amazing to be alive and whatever else is happening, it’s a beautiful world out there.
- Call that friend…we’ve all got that friend. The one who understands us. Who can always make us laugh. Who leaves us feeling energized when we hang up the phone. If you’re having one of those days, give that friend a call and just talk. If you’re worried about getting carried away (we know an hour can slip by with a good friend before you know it!) just be honest with your timeframe. Even a 10 minute chat can perk you up for the day.
- Schedule yourself a real break…choose a morning before the shop opens or maybe the evening it closes early and schedule time for yourself. This could be that mani-pedi you’ve been putting off or a massage. Or it could be as simple as parking your car at the park on the way to work, getting out for 20 minutes and taking a walk. You’d be surprised how a little break can refresh you!
Whether it’s a spa service or five minutes in the sunshine everyone deserves a break now and again. Refreshing your mind and relaxing your body can help you be more effective with your time—so however you choose to perk yourself up, we’d love to hear about it in the comments section below!
